From March 19-21 twelve advocates from the State of North Carolina, including BikeWalk NC staff and board members, attended the League of American Bicyclists National Bike Summit in Washington DC. Programming for the League Summit included multiple mobile workshops and organized rides around the Nation’s capital, as well as several days of sessions featuring nationally recognized speakers on topics ranging from federal transportation policy to Dutch infrastructure design principles applied to US cities.
The second day of the Summit was dedicated to lobbying efforts, as attendees from around the country met with their respective congressional representatives and staff to discuss several pieces of legislation aimed at improving infrastructure and safety for cyclists and pedestrians on our nation’s roadways.
During the Summit honors and awards ceremony, two NC advocates were honored with national awards from the the League. BikeWalk NC board member Steven Hardy-Braz was awarded the Citizen Advocate of the Year, and Eric Supil of Trips for Kids Charlotte received the Youth Empowerment Award.
The National Bike Summit was an amazing opportunity to learn from—and network with—bicycle and pedestrian advocates from around the country. We will be bringing back ideas for the NC BikeWalk Transportation Summit in September, and we are already looking forward to next year’s event.
