Vision:
“We envision a state where anyone can choose to bicycle, skate, run, and walk as normal, practical, healthy, safe and active transportation.”
Mission:
“To inspire and support advocacy and educational efforts throughout North Carolina for an environment that fairly and equitably accommodates bicyclists, skaters, pedestrians, and others using human-powered active transportation.”
Goals:
- To promote active transportation for health and recreation, as well as for travel.
- To connect with local active transportation clubs, exercise-related businesses and health-focused organizations for a unified voice, and to establish partnerships with similar groups at the state and national levels.
- To support active transportation efforts without discrimination based on race, gender, handicap/ability, or religion.
- To advocate for a statewide network of on- and off-road routes, as well as an increase in the share of funding for active transportation facilities from NCDOT and other governmental and private sources.
- To increase the visibility and meaningfulness of “Share the Road” campaigns and to put active transportation in all its forms on the legislative agenda.
- To increase the number and percentage of people using active transportation to get to work, school and other important destinations.
- To make shared spaces and other active transportation planning part of the normal design process for governmental and business-related projects, and to increase resident participation in that planning.
- To provide education to local governments and advocacy groups about active transportation, and to develop effective lines of communication about public and private active transportation initiatives.
- To promote education, encouragement, enforcement and evaluation of active transportation programs and facilities, and to establish equitable conditions for active transportation across the state.
- To encourage study and data collection on all forms on active transportation uses such as Safe Routes to School events and participation in commuter challenge events (e.g. Bike/Walk/Skate to Work Week).
