On Feb. 1, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced $800 million in grant awards for 510 communities through the first round of funding for the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant program.
These awards include 11 Action Plan Grants for the State of North Carolina. Total funding for Action Plans throughout the state totals $3,690,371. Action Plan Grants assist communities that do not currently have a roadway safety plan in place to reduce roadway fatalities, laying the groundwork for a comprehensive set of actions. It also provides funding to communities that want to build upon an existing roadway safety plan.
The City of Charlotte was awarded an Implementation Grant aimed at significantly reducing or eliminating transportation-related fatalities and serious injuries. The grant, totaling $4,466,688, will implement systemic Vision Zero strategies to reduce risky behaviors through infrastructure improvements, with a focus on intersections and pedestrian involved crashes.
