New Belgium Brewing’s Tour de Fat Raised More than $25,000 for Durham, N.C. Bicycling Nonprofits
Thousands gathered in Diamond View Park for a day of beer and bike love, jammin’ music, crazy costumes and a whole lot of fun
Ft. Collins, CO, June 23, 2014 – Tour de Fat, New Belgium Brewing’s traveling festival of bikes, beer and bemusement, raised $25,243 for Durham, N.C. bicycling nonprofits last Saturday, June 21, up 26 percent from last year. About 4,000 bicycle and beer enthusiasts came to Diamond View Park for the event.

Although it is free to attend Tour de Fat, proceeds from beer and merchandise sales and donations from bike parade participants went to local nonprofits. The beneficiaries this year, which are all focused on making Durham a better place to ride, are BikeWalk NC (https://www.facebook.com/BikeWalkNC), Triangle Spokes (http://www.trianglespokesgroup.org) and Durham Bike Co-Op (http://www.durhambikecoop.org).

“The 2014 Durham Tour de Fat was the best ever,” said Bill Bussey of BikeWalk NC. “We had seasonable weather, super volunteers, a great show, lots more participants and plenty of cold beer. Everyone was having a great time in the Bull City! The funds raised will go a long way in making the Triangle and North Carolina a better place to ride a bike.”

A highlight of every Tour de Fat stop is the car-for-bike swap where one person commits to commute by bike for the next year. Susan Stephens is this year’s swapper from Durham.

“I’m stoked to have this voice for cycling,” said Stephens. “The new bike is a boon, but I’m more thrilled to have focus on taking cars off the roads. My plan is to empower kids by sharing the freedom and independence of cycling, connecting the effort on the pedals to their journey in life.”
