On Saturday, September 19, join BikeWalk NC for Traffic Bicycling for Transportation Professionals, a full-day, on-bike training designed for transportation engineers, planners, law enforcement, advocates, and anyone interested in becoming a safer, more confident cyclist. The course runs from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM and costs $50, with all proceeds supporting BikeWalk NC.
This class will qualify for the following education credits: PDH credits through NCSITE, AICP credits through APA-NC, and TCIRCP credits through the NC-DOJ, traffic crash reconstruction division.

Led by League of American Bicyclists Master Instructor Steven Goodridge, this immersive course combines classroom instruction with practical riding experience to teach the fundamentals of safe, efficient, and lawful bicycling in traffic. Throughout the day, participants will build confidence through guided exercises, learn defensive bicycling techniques, gain a deeper understanding of bicycle laws, and explore how roadway design and traffic operations affect people traveling by bike.
The training begins with bicycle handling skills before progressing to riding on neighborhood streets and eventually navigating more complex traffic situations. Along the way, participants will examine common crash types, practice effective riding strategies, and gain practical insight into bicycle facility design and transportation planning. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive League of American Bicyclists Traffic Skills 101 Certification.
No advanced cycling experience is required. Participants should be comfortable riding approximately twelve miles at a casual pace with frequent breaks for classroom instruction. Each participant should bring a bicycle in good working condition, a helmet, a water bottle, and comfortable clothing for riding.
Steven Goodridge has been an avid commuter and recreational cyclist for more than 30 years and is a League of American Bicyclists Master Instructor. He developed the bicycle safety and law enforcement training programs used by the Raleigh Police Department and NC State University Police Department and currently serves on the Board of Directors for BikeWalk NC.
As Eric J. Lamb, PE, with the City of Raleigh Public Works Department, shared after taking the course, “This course is a good starting point for transportation design professionals to actually understand what it is they’re designing for.”
Whether you’re a transportation professional looking to better understand the cyclist’s perspective or a rider hoping to improve your skills and confidence, this course offers practical knowledge that extends well beyond the Summit. Space is limited, so be sure to reserve your spot when you register.
